Blue Bell Creameries is the manufacturer of the Blue Bell brand of ice cream, made since 1911. The company, which produces the third best-selling ice cream in the country, sells its products in only 23 southern states, although Blue Bell ice cream has also been eaten on the International Space Station and at Camp David.

Blue Bell produces more than 250 ice cream products. Of these, 66 are ice cream flavors. Twenty-one of the flavors are offered year-round, while about three to four dozen are offered seasonally. In addition to ice cream, the company produces frozen yogurt and sorbet.

The company operates three manufacturing complexes, the largest being a 53,380 m² complex in Brenham, with ancillary facilities in Broken Arrow (Oklahoma) and Sylacauga (Alabama). There are also 50 sales and distribution centers spread across its 23-state market. These complexes employ 2,800 employees, with 850 employees working out of Brenham. In 2006, annual sales exceeded $400 million.

Blue Bell retains control of all aspects of its business, primarily to ensure quality control and the use of the freshest ingredients available. The Kruses claim that “the milk we use is so fresh it was grass yesterday.” The company owns 60,000 cows, and the cream used each day for production is always less than 24 hours old. All production and packaging takes place at the Blue Bell facility, which is capable of producing more than 100 pints per minute. The drivers of the distribution vehicles personally stock it on shelves to ensure that it is handled properly.

Blue Bell has impressive sales numbers, being the third best-selling ice cream in the United States for 2004, behind Breyers and Dreyer’s, despite being sold in only 16 states. The sales area includes the southern states between Nevada and Florida and south to Kansas City, an area that comprises only 20% of the geographic ice cream market. By comparison, each of Blue Bell’s top 4 competitors sells its products in more than 86% of the United States. In order to become one of the three largest ice cream manufacturers, Blue Bell has consistently been the largest seller in most of the markets it has entered. In five months since its entry in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the company has gained 35% of the ice cream market. In its home state of Texas, the company has 52% of the market. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station have also been treated to Blue Bell in 2006 “to help the (crew’s) happiness quotient.”

Why is Walmart out of Blue Bell Ice Cream?

In March 2015, Blue Bell Creameries requested a recall on an assortment of items produced at the dairies, including the ‘Great Divide Bar’ and the ‘Almond Bar’. This was due to the discovery of five cases of listeriosis in Kansas believed to be caused by products from the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma-based Blue Bell Creamery. Three of the five patients with Listeria died. Listeria was also found at Blue Bell Creamery’s main plant in Brenham, Texas. Blue Bell issued recalls of selected products from its dairies.

On April 20, Blue Bell issued a voluntary recall covering all of its products due to the possibility of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled products were distributed to 23 states as well as international destinations. This was as a result of “an enhanced sampling program” launched by Blue Bell that produced “several positive tests for Listeria at different locations and plants,” including three other cases in Texas.
